syriapol
differs
from other polls.Instead
of answering direct questions, you will be presented with 16
cards, each one describing a
hypothetical future of Syria. You will then be asked for your
opinion on each card.
read
the instructions below
Each
card will contain 5 hypothetical statements, as shown below:
A
statement about Syria's progress of
political change
A
statement about Syria's government system
A
statement about Syria's economic situation
A
statement about Syria's method of
governance
A

Syria will be described by one of the following 3 possibilities:
Political
changes will occur slowly but peacefully, without uprooting the

invasion
On each

in Syria will be described by one of the following 3 possibilities:
The
government will be a secular one, in which all religions & ethnic groups
will have equal rights under the law OR
The government will
be a sectarian one, in which specific positions will be reserved for
certain religious & ethnic communities, & representation will be
proportional to the religious & ethnic composition of the people
OR
The
government will be an Islamic one, which follows Sharia &
governs Syria based upon Islamic guidelines
On each
card, the hypothetical future economic situation in Syria will be
described by one of the following 2 possibilities:
Economic reforms, encouragement of foreign investment,
& reduced corruption will lead to
higher wages & strong economic growth OR
Slow progress of economic reforms
& inability to attract foreign investment or tackle
corruption will keep
wages flat & prohibit economic growth
On each
card, the hypothetical future method of governance
in Syria will be described by one of the following 2 possibilities:

political change
A
statement about Syria's government system
A
statement about Syria's economic situation
A
statement about Syria's method of
governance
A
statement about Syria's position on the
peace process
Each card will
differ slightly from the others. Sometimes, only 1 or 2 of the statements
will change, according to a mathematical formula. Read each card
carefully.
Your job is to read each card,
one by one, & decide how you would feel if those
5 statements described
Syria in the future.
Then give a rating using the following scale:
Totally
unacceptable
Strongly
distasteful
Distasteful
Acceptable
Preferable
Strongly
Preferable
Ideal
Consider each card
thoroughly.
It will require a lot of thought to prioritize your preferences, since all
5 factors tend to be important.
When you finish reading a card,
click the button to give your rating, then scroll down to the next card. Do this for all
16 cards.Why 16?
Clearly, 3x3x2x2x2= 72 possible cards. However, you will rate only 16. The 16 cards are NOT selected out of bias; they are determined by a mathematical
formula.
Just as in geometry, 2 points make a line, even though the line has many,
many points; 3 points make a plane, even though a plane has many, many
points; for the same basic mathematical reason, 16 cards provide sufficient
information to draw valid conclusions for all 72 possibilities.
Completing
the
entire survey will take about 20 minutes. Be sure to devote sufficient time to evaluate each card,
as overall results depend on well-considered ratings of all 16.
